Matt Helders: ‘We want to do a record that is like ‘Evil Twin’ and ‘R U Mine?’
Arctic Monkeys’ drummer Matt Helders has spoken about the band’s plans for their new record and has revealed that they are keen to continue in the vein of recent single ‘R U Mine?’ and B-side ‘Evil Twin’.
Speaking to the Examiner, the drummer replied to a question about their new single by saying: “The way ‘R U Mine?’ has gone we are more into doing songs like that for now. We are kind of into the idea of doing a record that is like ‘Evil Twin’ and ‘R U Mine?’.” 
The band are currently in the middle of a lengthy stint across the USA and Canada as support to The Black Keys on their US arena tour and Helders also spoke about this, revealing that the band had been excited to appear as the opening act for the first time in their career.
He said of this: “We’ve been looking for a tour like this since we started because we’ve never done a support tour, not in England, not anywhere. We were trying to think what the right band would be, and we had some good offers that didn’t work out timing wise from other bands. For this (tour) we thought it would be stupid to turn down. It’s a massive tour, and I think we’ve done as much as we could on our own without doing something like this.”
The drummer also spoke about the band’s new track ‘Electricity’, which is due out later this month as the B-side to ‘R U Mine?’, saying: “When we recorded ‘Electricity’ we recorded ‘You & I’ which was the B-side to ‘Black Treacle’ and (recorded) another one that didn’t really work out. It was a good song, but it didn’t fit in with ‘R U Mine?’ so ‘Electricity’ was the one that seemed to make more sense. It’s really the only thing we’ve got that nobody has heard yet that is already recorded.”
Matt Helders confirms band are working on new material
Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders has spoken about the band’s work on the follow-up to ‘Suck It And See’ and has confirmed they are working on new tracks while on tour.
The band are currently in the middle of a lengthy stint across the USA and Canada as support to The Black Keys on their US arena tour and Helders has confirmed that they have been using their soundchecks to work on new tunes.
Asked by Paste Magazine if the band’s new single ‘R U Mine?’ would feature on the band’s next album, Helders replied: “It’s a standalone thing. Mainly because we kinda needed something new to put out for this tour I suppose. We’d already done four singles for ‘Suck It And See’ so we decided to do something new. We haven’t really started writing officially, a record or anything, but there’s a few things we’re playing around with in sound checks.” The drummer also said that the band had been very pleased with the online reaction to ‘R U Mine?’ and in particular how people have responded to the song’s video, which you can see by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking.
He said of this: “The idea was sometimes when were messing around driving we film ourselves singing stupid songs on the radio, people do that I think, and in a way we wanted to do a video we could put out straight away without any promotion which is what we did with ‘Brick By Brick’. We didn’t tell anybody we were releasing it, we just put it out. In a way, that worked better than any other video we’ve put out. And ‘R U Mine?’ more people have watched that than any other video on this album. So obviously it worked.”
Helders also spoke about how well the tour with The Black Keys was going and said that he and his bandmates had always been big fans of the ‘El Camino’ duo.
He added: “We’re really big fans of Black Keys, kind of always have been. It’s a great tour to be able to watch them as much as you want as well. We’ve never done a support tour so it’s quite a lot of excitement and fun to just go on for an hour and you’ve got the rest of your night to enjoy as well.”
Arctic Monkeys announced earlier this week that they will be releasing a brand new track titled ‘Electricity’ later this month.
Alex Turner: ‘I want to start writing follow-up to ‘Suck It And See”
Arctic Monkeys‘ Alex Turner has said that he wants to start writing the band’s new album.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the frontman said he was eager to start penning tunes on the follow-up to last year’s ‘Suck It And See’ so he could get a “head start” on the new record.
The band are currently in the middle of a lengthy stint across the USA and Canada as support to The Black Keys on their US arena tour and, when asked if he had been working on new material on the road, he replied: “A bit. I don’t try to write on the road. I might try to this time, just for a change. Usually, I get home and I realize it’s bad, so I’ve not done it in the past.”
He added:
We’ve messed around in sound checks, but I’m not gonna meet a deadline, and it’s not like I need to write, though I want a head start for the next time around.
If I sing on a B-side of theirs, or if Al does something with us, it doesn’t really matter that we’re not in the same band. We’re all best mates and we love working with each other. We’re brothers.
